Let's immerse in the Nakahechi route which is the most popular of the surviving Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails.
UNESCO World Heritage sites, Kumano Kodo and St. James' Way(Spain), are located in both regions, and for over 20 years the two regions have worked together to contribute to world peace through youth exchange programs and joint tourism promotion.
Kumano worship has a history of coexistence of different religions in a syncretism of Shintoism and Buddhism. At the bottom of this belief is the worship of nature. Kumano's respect for nature can send a message of peace to the world.
Now walk slowly while listening to the guide's explanation and ask about the following spots.
Highlights Gyuba Doji Statue This stone Buddha of Gyuba Doji is small and cute, measuring only 50 cm in height, and has become a symbol of Nakahechi. Chikatsuyu Oji There are restaurants and private houses where you can stay overnight, and you can stroll along beautifully paved paths. Tsugizakura Oji The group of giant cedar trees on the temple grounds are called ""one-sided cedars in Nonaka"" because their branches are uniformly directed toward the southeast. Hosshinmon Oji From Hosshinmon Oji is the entrance to the sanctuary Kumano Hongu, which is considered the sacred area of Kumano Hongu Taisha. Mizunomi Oji There is a legend that when Kobo Daishi poked the ground with his staff, water gushed out, and a kind of water fountain was set up beside the temple. Fushigami Oji It is said that the name Fushigami Oji comes from the fact that pilgrims following the Nakahechi route fell down to worship the Kumano Hongu Taisha as they would see it here for the first time. Even today, the former shrine site Oyunobara can be seen from between the mountains. Kumano Hongu Taisha The Kumano Hongu Taisha is the first stop on the Nakahechi route, one of the most popular pilgrimage routes in Kumano, after a long and arduous journey. Among the three mountains, the Kumano Hongu Taisha has a particularly old-fashioned atmosphere. Oyunobara The 33-meter-high Otorii (Grand Gate), the tallest in Japan, was built in a corner of the vast site where the old shrine building used to stand before the Hongu Taisha was relocated."
