Yamaga is a hot spring town located in the Kikuchi River basin that flows through Kikuchi, the rice-producing region of Kumamoto. During the Edo period, Buzen Kaido was a bustling route connecting Kumamoto and Fukuoka on the way to Edo, the center of Japan. Even today, kabuki performances are held periodically at Yachiyoza.
