Enjoy cycling for Shimanami Kaido highlights (20km!) and ferry! You can enjoy the beautiful scenery that are registered as national park, the Seto Inland Sea and the islands, from the Shimanami Cycling Road and ferry!
The Shimanami Kaido begins on Honshu in Onomichi City.It then leads across the six islands of Mukaishima, Innoshima, Ikuchijima, Omishima, Hakatajima and Oshima, before terminating on Shikoku in Imabari City.
The route was opened in 1999, so the bridges are modern and attractive. Along the way, travelers can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Seto Inland Sea and the islands' small towns.
The bicycle route is well marked and maintained, and diverges from the expressway on the islands. The ramps leading up to the bridges were built at small inclines with cyclists in mind.
The total distance of Shimanami Kaido is 70 kilometers, the cycling distance on an electric bike is only about 20 kilometers since we will be using ferry! Plus, because there are no large inclines, it can be comfortably completed in a day by intermediate cyclists.
Ikuchijima Island Ikuchijima Island features a warm, gentle climate and is widely famous for its production of high-quality citrus fruits, especially lemons. In addition to its vibrant agricultural charms, the entire island functions as an open-air museum, allowing visitors to discover unique artistic installations and public sculptures scattered throughout the landscape.
Setoda Port to Tatara Shimanami Park (Cycling Section) On this scenic cycling section, riders can take in stunning panoramic views from the grand Tatara Bridge. Built with innovative engineering, it was celebrated as the world's longest cable-stayed bridge at the time of its completion in 1999. Pedaling across this architectural masterpiece offers an extraordinary vantage point over the island-dotted waters.
Michi-no-Eki Tatara Shimanami Park Situated right at the edge of the water, this vibrant roadside station is the ideal location to take a refreshing break while feeling the gentle ocean breeze. It offers visitors a perfect, unobstructed lookout point to admire the elegant, soaring structure of the Tatara Bridge stretching across the sea.
Shitadami Port to Imabari (Cycling Section) This final cycling leg leads riders toward Imabari, incorporating a memorable stop at Itoyama Park. From this elevated vantage point, visitors can pause to enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding seascape illuminated by a beautiful sunset, bringing a memorable close to the journey.
