The Experience

Mt. Daisen Beech Forest, Ogamiyama Shrine Okumiya, and Daisen-ji Temple At the foot of Mt. Daisen—a celebrated peak in Tottori Prefecture—lies one of Japan’s largest primeval beech forests. A walk along the nature-rich approach leads to Daisen-ji Temple, which flourished as a center of mountain worship, and Ogamiyama Shrine Okumiya (Inner Shrine), home to Japan’s longest stone-paved approach; here, one can sense a mystical spiritual energy.

Amida-do Hall (Zazen Meditation Experience) This historic hall is the oldest surviving structure at Daisen-ji Temple and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Practicing zazen (seated meditation) within the serene, wooden hall offers a special opportunity to leave the hustle and bustle of daily life behind and quietly turn your focus inward.

Shukubo Kansho-in Sanrakuso (Shojin Ryori / Buddhist Vegetarian Cuisine) With a long history as a temple lodging (shukubo) for Daisen-ji, this inn is renowned for its shojin ryori—Buddhist vegetarian cuisine—that captures the essence of the season’s bounty, featuring local wild mountain vegetables and sesame tofu. These dishes, exquisite in both appearance and flavor, gently nourish both body and soul.
