About Mt. Koya

Founded by the monk Kobo Daishi at the beginning of the Heian period, Mt. Koya is the sacred center of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. Together with Mt. Osore in Aomori and Mt. Hiei in Shiga, it is regarded as one of Japan's three most sacred spiritual sites.

Highly Popular Experience!

Join an expert guide for a tour of Okunoin, one of Mt. Koya's two most revered sacred sites. An audio receiver with earphones is provided, making it easy to follow the guide's commentary.

Okunoin is the spiritual heart of Mt. Koya, where Kobo Daishi is believed to remain in eternal meditation. The approximately 2-km approach is lined with towering ancient cedar trees, creating a serene and deeply sacred atmosphere.

Savor a hearty lunch featuring Mt. Koya's local specialties.

  • Special Dengaku (grilled tofu with miso glaze)
  • Simmered Koya Tofu
  • Soy-Based Meat
  • Konjac Sashimi
  • Japanese Pickles
  • Shojin Noodle Hot Pot (may be served as chilled shojin noodles depending on the season)
  • Sesame Tofu
  • Mountain Burdock with Plum Dressing
  • Seasonal Side Dish
  • Kinzanji Miso
  • Mixed Rice with Yuba (Tofu Skin)
  • Dessert

Note: Menu items are subject to change without prior notice depending on ingredient availability.

Explore Kongobu-ji Temple and Danjo Garan, two of Mt. Koya's most iconic sacred sites, at your own pace.

Kongobu-ji Temple is the head temple of Shingon Buddhism and serves as the administrative center for all Shingon sect affairs.

Danjo Garan is one of Mt. Koya's two most sacred sites, alongside Okunoin. It was the first temple complex established by Kobo Daishi when he founded Mt. Koya.

  • Kondo (Main Hall): The principal hall of worship at Mt. Koya.
  • Konpon Daito: A striking vermilion pagoda built as the symbolic centerpiece of Shingon Buddhism. Its interior is said to represent a three-dimensional mandala.

Please note: Admission fees to Kongobu-ji Temple, Konpon Daito, and the Kondo are not included in the tour price.
