Visit Omiwa Shrine, Japan’s oldest sacred site, and stand in awe before the country’s largest, most majestic Torii gate.
Omiwa Shrine Believed to be the oldest Shinto shrine in Japan, Omiwa Jinja holds a unique tradition: it has no main hall because the deity worshipped here is Mt. Miwa itself. Since ancient times, this sacred mountain has been revered as a dwelling place of the gods. As you walk along the peaceful approach shaded by towering pines, cedars, and cypresses, you’ll immediately feel a gentle, nostalgic atmosphere.
The sprawling shrine grounds are filled with fascinating spiritual spots to explore: Meoto Iwa (Married Couple Rock): a popular sacred spot to pray for love, marriage, and good relationships. The Nade-Usagi ( Rabbit Statue): a mystical bronze rabbit said to heal physical pain in whichever part of your own body matches the area you touch on the statue. Sai Shrine: Home to a sacred spring. Visitors can drink the pure water, which has been celebrated for centuries for its healing properties. The Viewing Platform: offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the three historic mountains of Yamato. Kuehiko Shrine: dedicated to the god of wisdom, making it a popular stop for academic success.
Did you know that Omiwa Jinja is home to the god of sake brewing? Right nearby sits Imanishi Sake Brewery, the only remaining historic brewery in the area. It is the perfect spot to browse for authentic souvenirs and treat yourself to their famous, uniquely delicious sake-flavored ice cream! We’ll also stop by beloved local shops nearby known for crispy, savory croquettes and traditional monaka (sweet bean paste wafers). (Please note: Souvenirs and personal snacks are self-paid).
Catch the Fun: Nagashi Somen Experience! Get ready for a joyful Japanese culinary tradition—Nagashi Somen (flowing noodles)! Miwa in Sakurai City is celebrated as the historical birthplace of somen. These local noodles are famous for being incredibly thin, yet remarkably firm and satisfying.
How to enjoy: Catch the refreshing noodles with your chopsticks as they glide down the running water flume, dip them into a flavorful savory sauce, and enjoy! It’s a delicious, interactive dining experience you won't want to miss.
