The Experience

Join this insightful walking tour designed specifically for new visitors to Japan, providing a comprehensive introduction to the cultural and practical aspects of getting around this fascinating country. Start your journey in the bustling heart of Shinjuku, where you'll meet your guide and fellow travellers. This small group tour ensures a personalised experience, with the option to book a private guide and hotel pickup for added convenience (see purchase options when booking).

Your adventure begins with a visit to a local grocery store, or 'konbini', where you'll learn how to use the self-service machines and discover the wide range of products available. Next, learn the intricacies of Japan's train and subway systems. Your guide will show you how to buy tickets, use IC cards such as Suica or Pasmo, and interpret timetables so you can navigate Tokyo's extensive public transport network with ease. You'll also learn about public transport etiquette, such as keeping quiet, not talking on the phone, offering a seat to someone in need, and how and where to line up to wait for the doors to open.

As you explore the vibrant surroundings of Shinjuku Station, you'll visit a department store's "depachika", an underground food arcade, where you'll learn about tax-free shopping and how to navigate the different food sections. The tour continues with a trip on the JR Yamanote Line to the iconic Shibuya Crossing, where you'll experience Tokyo's dynamic energy first-hand.

Throughout the tour, your guide will provide valuable cultural insights, such as when to take off your shoes, the importance of quiet behaviour in public, and how to dispose of rubbish properly (there are almost no public bins in Japan!). You'll also learn basic Japanese phrases for everyday interaction and communication.

Safety and health are of paramount importance, so you'll find information on emergency contacts, how to find pharmacies and hospitals, and tips on using medical services if necessary. You'll also gain a clear understanding of money matters, including currency exchange, ATM use and the balance between cash and card payments in Japan.

This tour involves a fair amount of walking and provides an immersive experience that will give you the knowledge and confidence to make the most of your stay in Japan.
