The Yuzawa area is rich in history and culture, home to attractions such as the Akemiya Onsen Village—one of the oldest hot spring areas in Akita—and Kawarage Jigoku, one of Japan’s three major sacred sites alongside Osorezan and Tateyama. At the Kawatsura Lacquerware Traditional Crafts Center, you can experience the art of Maki-e, a decorative technique that has been used for centuries to embellish Japanese lacquerware.

In this workshop, you will create either a teapot stand or a coaster. First, choose your materials: gold or silver powder, or colored lacquer. Please note: items made with colored lacquer require approximately one week to complete before they can be handed over.

You will then experience authentic production steps, including placing the design, sketching, sprinkling powder, brush finishing, and final decoration. Even if this is your first time, experienced Maki-e artisans will carefully guide you through each step, so feel free to ask questions and enjoy the process with confidence.

This experience is suitable for participants of all ages. Elementary school children may join when accompanied by an adult, making it an excellent activity for families and even three generations traveling together. Each piece will turn out uniquely, adding to the excitement—and the finished lacquerware will be a special reminder of your journey.
