The Experience

Celebrate spring in Gunma Prefecture with a day filled with cherry blossoms, scenic rail travel, and local gourmet delights.

First, board the Watarase Keikoku Railway for a picturesque 15-minute ride from Mizunuma Station to Omama Station. Running along the Watarase River, this charming local railway offers beautiful seasonal views of cherry blossoms blooming along the valley, creating a stunning “sakura tunnel” from your train window.

Next, enjoy a special lunch at Tonton Hiroba featuring Fukubuta pork shabu-shabu and one signature pork fillet cutlet. Fukubuta pork is prized for its finely marbled meat, firm white fat, deep red color, and exceptional juiciness. Tender and flavorful, it’s often described as a “phantom” premium pork rarely found outside the region.

In the afternoon, visit Akagi Nanmen Senbonzakura, where approximately 1,400 cherry trees stretch for about 3.5 km along the southern foothills of Mount Akagi. Recognized as one of the “Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots” in Japan, this celebrated sakura tunnel attracts visitors from all over the country. During peak bloom, the combination of soft pink cherry blossoms and bright yellow rapeseed flowers creates a breathtaking spring panorama (best viewing typically early to mid-April; subject to weather conditions).

Finally, stop at Michi-no-Eki Maebashi Akagi, a trendy roadside station surrounded by the natural beauty of Mount Akagi. Browse a wide selection of local specialties including Baumkuchen cakes, yakimanju (grilled sweet buns), fresh farm produce, processed goods, and regional souvenirs before returning to Shinjuku.
