Visit Oita Fragrance Museum that offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the world of fragrances and create a personalized scent in Beppu, Oita Prefecture!
Museum Admission Visitors can admire a vast collection of about 3,600 fragrance-related items, including historic perfume bottles from ancient times to Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, incense burners, and distillation tools. The exhibits cover the history and science of fragrances worldwide, with English signage and scent sampling stations featuring rare natural perfumes. The museum also includes a shop selling fragrance products and an Italian café.
Perfume-Making Workshop The hands-on workshop lasts about 30 to 40 minutes and is guided by instructors. Participants select from over 30 nostalgic and refreshing scents, including top, middle, and base notes, to blend their own unique perfume. The process involves testing and mixing scents to create a 30ml of custom perfume, which can be taken home as a memorable souvenir. The museum stores each participant’s recipe, allowing them to reorder the same scent later by phone or email
This combined ticket and workshop provide an immersive cultural and sensory experience, blending education, creativity, and the unique natural heritage of Oita’s fragrance tradition.
The museum is small but well-curated, and the perfume workshop is highly praised for its engaging and educational approach.
The experience is suitable for all ages, though some reviews note the workshop is best enjoyed by those comfortable with Japanese or English guidance.
The museum offers a unique souvenir option by allowing customers to reorder their custom perfume later, making it a lasting memory of their visit
