enable-markdown: # "Suimeikai," one of the representative events of the Pontocho Kabukai, held its first performance on March 15, 1930. This was a progressive merger of two previous performing arts research groups: the "Nagauta Chiyoeikai" (established in February 1907) and the "Doyokai" (established in September 1927). It was named "Suimeikai" after the clear waters of the Kamo River.
At that time, it consisted only of geiko who possessed a level of skill above a special standard. Regular performances were held three times a year, in March, June, and October, until the 36th performance in October 1941. At that time, a "through ticket" was also issued, allowing the holder to enjoy performances throughout the year with a single ticket.
After the war, it was revived in September 1949, and performances were held twice a year, in March and September, until 1953. Afterward, a system of one performance per year with two parts (day and night) was adopted. However, following the abolition of the "Autumn Kamogawa Odori" in 1999, the event, which had previously been held in March, was moved to October.
Enjoy beautifully choreographed dance performance and the atmosphere!
