The Experience
Day 1: Traditions, Legends & a Rural Hot Spring Make traditional wagashi sweets and enjoy matcha at Shokin-do, a historic confectionery shop founded in 1866. Then take the Kanmon Ferry to Ganryujima, legendary for the duel between Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro, and explore the island’s historic atmosphere. In the evening, travel to peaceful Kawatana Onsen, surrounded by nature, and relax in the soothing waters of a traditional Japanese hot spring.
Day 2: Cycling Around the Kanmon Straits Explore Kawatana Onsen before visiting Karato Market to enjoy local flavors. Then begin your cycling adventure toward Chofu, a former castle town with samurai-era heritage. Continue to the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel and walk your bicycle beneath the strait from Honshu to Kyushu. For a memorable photo, stand with one foot in Yamaguchi and the other in Fukuoka. Cycle along the coast of Mekari for spectacular strait views, then continue to Mojiko Retro, a beautifully preserved historic port district. Finally, take the Kanmon Ferry with your bicycle back to Karato, completing your journey around the strait.
