The Experience

Catholic Kurosaki Church Catholic Kurosaki Church is a significant historical and religious site that showcases the rich Christian heritage of the region. Built in 1920, the church stands as a testament to the resilience of faith and the architectural prowess of its time. The church's construction began in 1897 under the guidance of Father de Rotz, a French missionary who played a crucial role in the industrial development and social welfare of the Sotome area during the Meiji period. The building's design reflects a blend of Romanesque motifs and French architectural styles, featuring a distinctive red brick exterior and a ribbed vault ceiling.

Shusaku Endo Literary Museum A museum that introduces the life and footsteps of Shusaku Endo, who wrote the novel "Silence" set in Sotome. Established in May 2000, the museum offers visitors a comprehensive look into Endo's literary world and personal life.

Shitsu Catholic Church Shitsu Church is part of the "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region" UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was inscribed in 2018. This church holds particular importance in the narrative of hidden Christians in Japan. The area where the church stands was home to descendants of settlers from various Sotome area settlements, including Shitsukyo, Kurosaki, and Ikejima. These settlers were likely part of the hidden Christian communities that preserved their faith in secret during the period of religious prohibition.

Father de Rotz Memorial Hall Father de Rotz Memorial Hall (a nationally-designated important cultural heritage site) was built in 1885 and used to be a fishing net workshop. This historical site dedicated to the life and work of Father Marco Marie de Rotz, a French missionary who made substantial contributions to the region in the late 19th century.
