The Experience

Twenty-Six Martyrs Museum and Monument Start your tour with a visit to this solemn site commemorating the 26 Christians executed in 1597. The museum offers insights into the persecution of Christians in Japan. Located on Nishizaka Hill, the complex was built in June 1962 to mark the 100th anniversary of the canonization of these martyrs. The museum and monument serve as a powerful reminder of the persecution of Christians in Japan and the struggle for religious freedom. It has been visited by notable figures such as Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa, and Pope Francis.

Urakami Cathedral The cathedral's origins date back to 1895 when construction began after the lifting of a long-standing ban on Christianity in Japan. Completed in 1914, it was one of the largest churches in Asia at the time. The cathedral can hold one thousand worshippers. Urakami Cathedral stands as a powerful symbol of the persecution, resilience, and revival of Christianity in Nagasaki, embodying both the city's tragic history and its enduring faith.

Oura Cathedral Built in 1864, it is considered the oldest existing church in Japan and holds immense historical and cultural importance. Oura Church is dedicated to the memory of the 26 Christians who were executed in the city in 1597. Designated as Japan's first Western-style National Treasure in 1933. It continues to attract numerous visitors, including tourists, pilgrims, and international travelers

Kaminoshima Catholic Church Kaminoshima (God's Island) used to be an island you could only access by boats. For its inconvenient location, quite a few Hidden Christians hid out on this island during the Edo Period when Christianity was forbidden.
