The Experience

A Road Where History and Nature Intertwine The Kurikoma Kodo is more than a trail; it is a "Road of History." Its roots reach back to the Heian period (794–1185), with records showing its use during the historic "Earlier Nine Years' War." Long before modern roads, it was a vital lifeline for the Emishi people, mountain priests, and Matagi hunters.

From Samurai Path to Modern Treasure In the Edo period, the powerful Date Clan officially designated this route as "Uwahane-michi," establishing post towns, shelter huts, and border checkpoints to protect the clan’s boundaries. While the path faded from common use during the modernization of the Meiji era, its isolation has perfectly preserved its original form.

Explore the Unspoiled Wilderness The greatest charm of this trek is seeing the landscape exactly as it was a millennium ago. As you hike through lush beech forests, you will encounter ancient stone monuments and markers that have survived the test of time. Whether it’s the vibrant alpine flowers of summer or the brilliant autumn colors of Mt. Kurikoma, this tour offers a profound connection to Japan’s enduring natural and spiritual heritage.
