Experience authentic winter in Hokkaido with ice smelt fishing on a frozen lake, followed by a relaxing soak at a nearby hot spring.
January and February mark the peak of winter in Hokkaido, and this tour offers a chance to fully experience its harsh yet beautiful natural environment. Located about one hour from Sapporo, Shinshinotsu Village sits in the heart of the Ishikari Plain, an area known for strong winds and heavy snowfall—perfect for experiencing Hokkaido’s true winter scenery.
The main activity takes place at Lake Shinotsu, a dammed lake of the Ishikari River, where you’ll enjoy ice smelt fishing inside tents set directly on the frozen surface. While the outside temperatures can be extremely cold, the tents are well equipped with kerosene heaters and wooden flooring, creating a warm and comfortable environment even in midwinter.
The fishing site is just a one-minute walk from Shinshinotsu Onsen Tappu-no-Yu, allowing you to warm up in the hot springs or relax in the rest area after your fishing experience. If you wish, your freshly caught smelt can be prepared and enjoyed at the restaurant for an additional fee.
With a return to Sapporo around 5:00 PM (5:30 PM on weekends and holidays), this tour is ideal for travelers looking to make the most of a single day while enjoying Hokkaido’s winter activities, cuisine, and onsen culture.
