・Hokkaido Shrine Hokkaido Shrine was established in 1869 when Emperor Meiji issued an imperial decree to enshrine the “ Kaitakushi Sanjin(Three guardian deities of Hokkaido's development)” in Hokkaido to “provide a spiritual center for the pioneers” of the island. The presence of this shrine dedicated to provided spiritual support for the pioneers as they faced the hardships of clearing away the primeval forest and provided a place for people to gather and talk.
